Installation

You need Tabby and an installed, configured Codex or Claude Code. Automatic session discovery requires Linux. A separate agent-sessions installation is not required.

1. Install the plugin

  1. Open Tabby → Settings → Plugins.
  2. Find agent-recovery and click Get / Install.
  3. Restart Tabby. Version 1.1.0 should appear under Installed.

If the package does not appear in search, open the directory using Plugins folder and run:

npm install tabby-agent-recovery@latest

Restart Tabby afterwards. The same command updates an existing installation. View the npm package.

If you use a development copy through a symlink, update it in its source directory. Installing through npm over that link replaces it with the registry package.

2. Verify recovery

  1. Enable tab recovery in Tabby settings.
  2. Open Codex or Claude Code in a pane and begin a conversation so the agent saves its ID.
  3. Create a split and close Tabby normally: it saves the layout on exit.
  4. Reopen Tabby. Check the conversation, working directory and pane arrangement.

After a crash, Tabby’s last saved layout is available. Unsaved changes cannot be recovered. The plugin resumes the conversation but does not send the next message for you.

If automatic discovery does not work

Put the exact conversation ID into a Tabby profile. This also works on macOS and Windows. In Settings → Profiles, create a local profile and set the working directory, agent executable and arguments:

# Codex: command is the path to codex; arguments:
resume <conversation-ID>

# Claude Code: command is the path to claude; arguments:
--resume <conversation-ID>

Replace <conversation-ID> with the session’s actual UUID. Enter arguments separately from the executable path. --last and --continue do not identify a specific conversation.

A shared Codex daemon or custom wrapper may obscure which pane owns a session. For new Codex sessions, use --no-daemon when that option is available. Pin an existing conversation by its exact ID.

Local files

Snapshots are stored in ~/.local/state/tabby-agent-recovery by default. If agent-sessions already has a state directory, that directory is used. Override the path with AGENT_SESSIONS_STATE.

Both settings are off by default. If needed, set them in Tabby’s launch environment, then restart the application.
